Why Education?

Education and leadership development have always been pillars of our business. As the pioneer of Advanced Operations, SSA & Company knows that a multidisciplinary approach yields the best results. As part of G100 Companies, we see education’s impact through a broad range of issues. We recognize the overall impact that education has on our society, business, and economy; it is something fundamental in all of G100 Companies’ businesses. The Social Opportunity

Gaps in academic achievement cost the US economy trillions of dollars annually. Avoidable shortfalls in academic achievement often lead to tragic consequences for individuals (e.g. poor health and higher incarceration rates). These outcomes put tremendous cost on the country. A 2010 study by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) found that in a single school year, a well-above-average teacher (in the 84th percentile of effectiveness) may lead to as much as $400,000 in additional lifetime earnings for his/her class of 20 compared to an average teacher. If you add up all of the students and class years, the impact becomes astonishing. Replacing the bottom 5% to 8% of teachers with average teachers would add a net value of as much as $100 trillion to the US economy—or about six times its annual GDP.

The Opportunity for our Firm

We have a unique ability to apply our business expertise and techniques to improve operational efficiencies of schools. Likewise, we recognize the two-way information and findings flow between schools/teachers and business. That’s why we’re investing in the most promising approaches to education and piloting a program in partnership with one of the country’s most innovative schools, E.L. Haynes Public Charter School. It is a center for systemic reform that is transforming public education and serves as a national model of leadership, excellence, and innovation. It has received funding from major philanthropic organizations, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation as well as grants from DC’s Race to the Top.

Through our partnership, we will provide management consulting services to achieve operational excellence by eliminating inefficiencies in critical processes and help E.L. Haynes make data-driven decisions around organizational initiatives. Our preliminary projects have focused on: (1) driving organizational and operational improvements to eliminate non value-added activities, which shifts highly valuable non-instructional staff away from ‘firefighting;’ and (2) developing a revised budget model that will provide insights and analytics required for better short- and long-term decision making.
